Cleaning routine often involves making a few sprays because I want something strong to cut grease and dirt. Mil was visiting and he saw me mixing bleaching and ammonia. He said that the chemical smell was very strong and that he criticized me harshly because I was confusing them.

Is there a real danger here?

Bleach + ammonia

There is a danger of bleaching bleach and ammonia, but many people don’t know it. Everything is about chemical reactions that are likely to occur.

Both bleach and ammonia are strong on their own. They then mix together, a toxic gas known as chloraminine is produced. It can create various health risks.

Toxic fumes occur

Chloraminine gas is toxic when it occurs. It can cause problems like the following:

  • Irritated eyes
  • Severe respiratory distress
  • Watery eyes
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea

If it is exposed to toxic chemical reactions long enough, it can damage the respiratory tract!

Added Hazards

Often, people mix chemicals without knowing the dangerous chemical reaction. Then, they start to be cleaned in a room where there is not enough ventilation. The more you breathe, the more serious the conditions can be. It can also make it worse for other health problems such as asthma.

Mixing ammonia and bleach does not lead to a stronger cleaning agent.

Here are a few best applications:

  • Read the labels
  • Create plenty of ventilation
  • If you have experienced exposure and serious symptoms, contact local poison control.

Although it is scary to learn that you create a toxic chemical reaction, there are many products that you can mix like vinegar and baking powder. If you are not sure which chemicals you can mix, it is best to be connected to a cleaning product purchased from the store (and don’t confuse it with anything).
