In the IPL 2025 clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Delhi Capitals clinched a super over win over the Rajasthan Royals. However, after the match, Delhi Capitals’ bowling coach Munaf Patel has been fined and given a demerit point by the BCCI. It was due to Patel’s argument with the umpire during the match.
Munaf Patel’s heated argument
The match gained further attention when a video surfaced showing Munaf Patel, the bowling coach for Delhi Capitals, involved in a heated argument with the fourth umpire. The incident occurred near the boundary, where Munaf was visibly upset about the umpire not allowing a message to be relayed to the field.
As a result of this altercation, Munaf Patel was fined 25% of his match fees and awarded one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20, which concerns conduct contrary to the spirit of the game, and accepted the match referee’s sanction.
Starc won the match for DC
Despite Rajasthan looking set for a win until the final moments, fast bowler Mitchell Starc’s performance helped Delhi turn the game in their favour. Starc conceded only 8 runs in the 20th over, which levelled the scores, and allowed just 11 runs in the Super Over. Delhi successfully chased the target in four balls to register a memorable win.
Role of Munaf Patel in the match
Despite the controversy, Munaf’s contribution as a bowling coach has been notable, as some of the credit for Delhi’s impressive bowling effort is attributed to him. This performance played a crucial role in turning the tables during the match.
Mitchell Starc was named Player of the Match for his crucial spell. He took 1 wicket for 36 runs in his 4 overs, with the 20th over being particularly important in pushing the game to a Super Over.
