Urvil Patel already has more than other fruits in PowerPlay for CSK in IPL 2025.

Chennai Super Kings’ search for a successor to MS Dhoni might have come to an end on Wednesday. Urvil Patel, making his IPL debut, lit up the Eden Gardens in the KKR vs CSK clash. Batting at no.3, Patel stunned Kolkata Knight Riders with a breezy cameo, showcasing his big-hitting skills.

Urvil Patel makes statement on CSK debut

Urvil Patel’s debut IPL innings lasted just 11 balls, but the Gujarat wicket-keeper batsman showed glimpses of his destructive prowess. The 26-year-old got off the mark with a stunning six in the very first over of the innings. Incidentally, it was the first six hit by a CSK batter in the first over of the innings in IPL 2025.

He followed it up with a boundary and two sixes against Moeen Ali in the next over. Patel then smashed another maximum off Harshit Rana. before being caught at short third. Urvil chipped in with an entertaining 31 off just 11 balls, smashing 4 sixes in his brief stay.

Urvil hit 4 sixes in his brief stay, already the most by a CSK batter in the powerplay. Ayush Mhatre had hit 3 sixes in 55 balls so far, while Ruturaj Gaikwad had 2 in 44 balls. the 26-year-old has gone past that number in just 11 deliveries, adding much needed impetus to CSK batting.

MS Dhoni successor?

MS Dhoni at 43 is coming to the fag end of his IPL career. CSK groomed Ruturaj Gaikwad in the leadership role, but they still need to fill the gap behind the stumps. Urvil Patel’s emergence comes as a boon for the five-time champions. Patel keeps wickets for Gujarat in domestic cricket, across white and red-ball tournaments. The 26-year-old has 35 catches and 6 stumpings in 47 T20s.

With Gaikwad opting to bat at No.3, Urvil could slot in at the top of the order. Patel opens for Gujarat in white ball cricket, scoring two centuries in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
