‘I feel like I was in the chain’: Love Sweet Life Rock Legend Mari ‘Pierre | Reggae

IIn December 1978, Marie Pierre was number 1 in the Raggae table with Lovers Rock Classic Walk Away, and threw a good tear on a problematic relationship. Supported by another Permanent Stage song at Election ME, 1979, his first album Love Affair, was good until the 1980s as one of Troy’s best -selling albums; With the very octave of the crystal, Pierre seemed to be condemned to follow the contemporary, stupid games singer Janet Kay, the mainstream Pop-Reggae success.
However, Pierre has not released any other album in 46 years since then. Despite such a promising career – TV work and successfully singing concerts with Robert Plant, Donna Summer and Chaka Khan, it was disappointing and disabled ambition. Unfortunate, insecurity and ill -treatment, personal and professional, left him. Orum I feel like you’re on the chain, or he says in a video call. “I was anchored for a good reason.”
Pierre (Marilyn was born and now writes the name Mari) grew up in Clapham, one of the six brothers. His family moved from Guyana in the 1950s, where he became a well -known musician and faucet dancer named Little George, his father Little George. It started without Pierre’s career knowledge: “He felt that I was still sensitive and knew what the music industry could expose me.”
At the age of 14, his boyfriend Syd-a real or courage game he met on the bus soon came to make his husband for an appointment. He was impressed when he heard he was singing in the bathroom. Im I didn’t realize you were at home, Pier Pierre says. “When we go out, ‘I have to introduce you to my sister’s boyfriend, because they have a group and they are rehearsing in a basement.” His sister’s boyfriend was Dennis Boyll, still at school, but with his first band Matumbi, a Reggae and Dublaker begins his famous career as a pioneer. Bold was an important figure in Pierre’s life: “like a brother” music teacher.
“It was like a family – very close and very valuable to me, B said Bold says. “And he has always been a very powerful singer.” Pierre would secretly enter the All-Boys school of Boldell to put pieces in the school studio, including the first key song released under the name of Angelique. “He bought me a hat, jacket and pants, or he says. “Nobody knew I was a girl. He said to me: ‘Don’t open your mouth!’ There was a good relationship.
Pierre was gaining confidence. After rehearsing on a Bingo hall in Dalston in East London, Billy Ocean (Billy would see me at home and stayed at the dinner-he loved my mother’s food ”) The three-piece vocal group of the American army in England, who played Bass in Switzerland, joined Super Pack. But it wasn’t good, Pierre wrote Walk after a fight, and he was watching him at home and he was watching a Bette. I did. But Dennis turned him into rock rock. ”
Bold was led by Lovers Rock Sound, a more gentle, romantic look at the British Reggae. Now, for the first time in 30 years, enjoying a new rearrangement is still considered one of the high points of the species; Pierre wrote a few songs with Boldel’s pieces and lush production. “Great record, B said Boylel. As the title pointed out, many songs were not about romanticism, but unfaithful: SYD had a relationship. “It’s all based on real stories, Pier Pierre says. “[The affair] He was pest because he was my best friend. I’m not sorry anymore. All wisdom. If you don’t live, you never know. “Did SYD hear the songs?
Even before the release of the album, the problems were installed. Pierre said it was not properly credit for some parts of the love relationship; Butel says it’s not true. Pierre also said that he also rejected his permission to release the material he recorded: “Everyone was winning theirs, but I was waiting for loyalty.”
BOVELL stalls: “If they were not released, they were not ready.”
Open, the Lovers Rock scene did not treat Pierre well: lack of support and use of promoters for years. “At some point, he said: Why do I do this?” says Bovell.
And while Bovell’s eclectic career worked with a series of artists such as Pop Group and The Slits, he disappeared a little without Pierre’s mentor. “I just felt I couldn’t work with anyone but him, or he says. “Because I trust him indirectly.”
“We’ve been shredded, B said Bold says Bovell admitting that he’s too busy to register with him, even though he bought Pierre to do shows in the United States and Japan. “He didn’t want to work especially with other producers. And I couldn’t work alone with him – I had to go and get my career.”
The situation struck Pierre’s trust in the sector, not Pierre’s trust. “I haven’t really believed in anyone since then, or he says. This also applies to romantic relationships. Syd says: “My first love and end. I went out and went out. But wisdom taught me that I didn’t want extra baggage.
After some unsuccessful collaborations, Pierre supported song singing and TV works, including singing the theme melody of the Channel 4 in the 1980s. He also gave a concert as a three -piece damaged daughters with the spirit singer of the 80s Princess. Donna Summer, Chaka Khan and Randy Crawford song Terry Wogan Show and Channel 4’s Club X as an in -house singer had concerts.
Most importantly, Robert Plant’s 1988 album Sang in Now and Zen. When he got the call, he didn’t know who he was, but he did such a good job that the plant sent him as a thank you platinum disc. “Proudly hangs on my wall. And I was more humble and well greeted than Robert Plant, because all the years I have been in, I did not get this recognition from myself.”
When the Supremes Tribute Act finished a 12 -year run that prevented the sauce band, he was disappointed again, and in the last decade, only the shows were Rock Reunion Nights. “But that’s not what I really want to do. Pierre has a positive tendency – “I am not consumed with bad feelings or evil” – but everything was clearly wage. Im I felt these strokes, or he says. “I feel that happiness or joy is only for a moment, because you don’t know who’s waiting in the corner to steal it from you.” It also suffers from arthritis and is emotionally painful, costly, long proof dispute with some family members. “It affects my creativity. I can’t find the joy in life.”
But it may not be too late. Days later, Pierre steals our interview to say, “Just made me think, let’s do it.” He contacted with Boyll; He sent some old and new pieces to work to publish not only a heart to the heart, but also to publish a EP.
“Because we’re like a family, we can start as we desire, B said Bold says. “I invited him to do his lyrical magic, because he comes with really good lyrics.” Pierre also contacted some old connections: they plan to enter the studio in spring. “All I had to do is contacted some people and my son was ready to go.” It sounds very happy. “So, it’s not the end of Mari Pierre, or he says. “I went back to horse and I’m ready to ride!”
