I’ve been working steadily for hours, but I feel as if I didn’t start. My attention is attracted by countless someone I believe to have the necessary job interruptions – from my assigned task – to write this story. (Okay, a pair of cats, who believe in their needs.)
My children and I say “squirrel days” In honor of dug2009 Pixar Film Talking Dog (Squirrel !!) In the film “Up” movie (squirrel !!) constantly distracted, almost (squirrel !!) ……
Unfortunately, he is a professor of informatics at Irvine University, investigating how digital media affects our lives. According to Gloria Mark, unfortunately most of us spend “squirrels” days. In his book “Attention: A groundbreaking way of gaining balance, happiness and productivity, ”Mark explains how to focus on decreases in decades of research.
Mark said, “We measured the average attention on a screen in 2004 as 2½ minutes,” Mark said. “A few years later, we saw that their fields of attention were about 75 seconds. Now we see that people can pay attention to only one screen for 47 seconds.”
Mark is not only concentrated on a minute less than a minute, but also takes about 25 minutes to focus it again when it is drawn from an active working project. (Wait, what ??)
“In fact, our research shows that it takes 25 minutes and 26 seconds before returning to the original working sphere or project, Mark said.
How can this be? Mark, “If we look at the work in terms of transition projects, contrary to the micro view of the screens, people in any business project – internal or by someone – we spend about 10½ minutes before being interrupted and then move to another business project,” he said.
Yeah, but then we’re going back to the original, right? Mark Mark said wrong. Instead, when the project is interrupted to the Second Project, we are still in a different task – call it the project triple. Incredibly, his research showed that we were interrupted in the third project and that we were transferred to the fourth project.
“And then you go back and get the original interrupted project, Mark Mark said. “But it’s not as interrupted and you don’t do anything. You’ve been working on other things for more than 25 minutes.”
(At least I can tell my boss when I miss my deadline.)
“However, there is a key cost, Mark Mark added. “Switch cost, it’s time to go back to your business: ‘Where was I? What was I thinking?’ This additional effort can also lead to mistakes and stress.
Why is all this problem? As a result, it is called multiple tasks, it is considered a very valuable skill to deal with the demands of the information age by many.
“There is no such thing as multiple tasks, except for a few rare people, Mark said Mark. “If one of the tasks is not as automatic as chewing gum or walking, you can’t do two troublesome things at the same time.”
For example, he said that you cannot read E -Post and you cannot be at a video meeting. When you focus on something, you lose the other. “Actually, you change your attention very quickly between the two, Mark Mark said. “And when you quickly change your attention, it is associated with stress.”
Blood pressure rises. The heart rate accelerates. Psychological stress measures also show negative consequences such as more fatigue and errors and less productivity: “The more people do too much, they make more mistakes.”
Who did this to us? Of course, we did it with the help of technology criminals such as social media, tablets and television. But Mark charges are mostly e -mail.
“In my opinion, E -Post is probably the worst, because it has become a symbol of a job,” he added that his research found a direct correlation between E -mail and more stress.
“We have cut E -mail for some workers in an organization for a working week,” he said. “Using heart rate monitors, we found that they were significantly less stressful and can focus on a significant longer period of time.”
(I find myself paused to look at the flights to Bora Bora. Oh, right. There is e -mail there.)
Mark said, “There is no way for a person to completely cut technology and work in today’s world,” Mark said. “So, let’s learn how to live with him in a way that preserves our positive prosperity.”
Re -gaining your focus again requires you to pay attention to how you use the technology, Mark is a intimidating task if you think an average American screens spend at least 10 hours on an average American screens.
Parad Paradoxically, you can use the technology to help, dedi he said. Plan a cement work for the first part of the day you’re not exactly alert, then use the technology to prevent distraction elements when you are best. Empty the tasks from your brain at night, and then remove the list.
Is it distracted by social media sites? Hide them, Mark said: ın remove the icons from your desktop and bury the applications on your phone in the folders, spend extra effort to find it here. Leave your phone in another room or put it in a drawer and lock it. ”
It is also important to learn when to take a break. “If you have to read more than once, or if words are not recorded, it’s time to stop and renew,” he said.
The best break is a walk in nature: “A 20 -minute walk in nature can help to relax people significantly, Mark said Mark. “And we have seen that people can help people to produce more ideas – it is called different thinking.”
Is it too cold to walk outside? Do something interesting that does not make mental effort.
Mark, “I have a friend who is a professor of MIT and his favorite activity matches the socks,” he said. “Another friend likes to iron. Ideas can incubate and then return to hard work and see it with fresh eyes.”
