Spotlight stays in Urvil Patel, MS Dhoni misses offshore 4

Historically, CSK has a head-to-head 16-14 advantage, but RR has won 7 of the last 9 in recent years.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) will clash in Match 62 of IPL 2025 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 20. Although both teams are out of playoff contention, they’ll play for pride and to shape their plans for next season. With little to lose, they might try out some new combinations, giving fringe players a chance to shine, which could also boost their prospects in next year’s IPL player auction.
As for CSK, the franchise has already used 22 players this season — the most by any team — and now finds itself down to the last available overseas quartet: Dewald Brevis, Noor Ahmad, Devon Conway, and Matheesha Pathirana. Yes, the remaining four overseas options aren’t available for CSK, with the English duo of Sam Curran and Jamie Overton not returning to India.

CSK: All eyes on exciting Urvil Patel
Urvil Patel’s electric debut against KKR — 31 off 11 balls with 4 sixes — has all but secured his spot in the XI. With his powerplay hitting outshining the rest of CSK’s top order, he’s likely to retain the top-order role alongside Ayush Mhatre. Devon Conway, returning from injury, is expected to slot as an opener again, but can be moved to number three too. Meanwhile, Dewald Brevis, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni form the middle and lower order.
Matheesha Pathirana, despite a lean patch, is likely to continue. So far at IPL 2025, Pathirana has picked up just 12 wickets at an expensive economy of 10.17. Ashwin’s inclusion adds experience but even he has had a poor season while CSK will bank on spin again through the Jadeja-Ashwin-Noor trio — a potentially potent threat to RR’s right-handed core. With just pride and experimentation on the line, expect CSK to back their young guns once again in Delhi.
