Shreyas Iyer, how did he redesign his technique for short ball – and how can Quicks challenge him | IPL 2025

The longest time, the discussion around Shreyas ıyer dough Weakness against short ball, especially at high speed.
The conversation seemed to have been damaged on the dough: “You created it mahaul [scenario] I can’t play a short ball outside and I feel that people get it occasionally and play regularly in your mind. ”
In January of this year, he called the “disturbing” criticism from “150 km / h people who do not encounter bowling” and said in February, “Maybe I was typical” (as a short ball weakness).
However, for those who enter the IPL or indeed watching the Champions Cup and the British White Ball series that came before him, Shreyas seems to be a distant moment. Suddenly, it seems to have opened a different side of the kick – passing the test of the short ball with pleasure and passing with flying colors.

At the first five strokes of this IPL season, Shreyas made 250 runs, hit an average of 83.3 and 208.3. 20 six of them are only in the second and last match of 31 of Nicholas Pooran Even if not for the really cruel Sunrisers Chase, 36 closed 36 would be emphasized.
He had a weakness that the opposition could target. Apparently, what can the pottery people approach as an ungrateful task to restrict it?
How did Shreyas Iyer change the approach of confrontation with fast pottery?
The most striking change he has made is in his attitude towards a stroke wrinkle, as emphasized by broadcasting commentators during his shooting against SRH.

This new stance was also used by Shreyas during the UK series and is actually used since Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year.
The new posture (right) is significantly different from two basic ways. First, Shreyas more “open”, the front leg on the leg side of the road. Second, the rear elevator is much higher and more angled towards the point. In the action, he shakes the bat more strongly before he starts playing.
Shreyas also brought a trigger movement because the Bowler provided the ball: taking an important step back. As Michael Clarke is observed on the comment, this initially shifts the body weight to the back foot and then allows the acceleration to pass back to the ball when hitting the ground.
The following example was a traction taken from last year’s IPL, and both of the season was hit six.

The first clear difference is the location of the feet. By stepping backwards, Shreyas plays deeper in wrinkles, gives him an extra time to choose the length – and if he is short, to avoid hurry rapidly.
Another change in the back foot. It seems to have made a conscious effort to plant this foot firmly on the ground (in general, not only for shooting). As of last year, in this example, even if the rear foot will be in contact with the ball, it is separated from the ground. It means that it can potentially lose extra strength without serving an anchor or a stable base task.
The third and perhaps the most important is the place where he tries to play the ball. Before this year, Shreyas usually rolled his wrists to keep the ball down in a classic way: Remember how he still points to the square leg on the closing of the bat face on IPL 2024 (left). Compare this with this year, when it looks more aggressive, keep it open with a higher way to hit the ball instead of holding the bat face.
A similar tip for what he’s trying to do comes from the body position. He would stand upright in 2024, he almost wanted to cross the ball and jump. But in 2025, it bends a little more – a side effect of trying to hit the ball high and long.
All these adjustments seem to have been adapted to improve their scoring ability against short -acting bowling. According to the loan, he has worked so far.
In 2022, IPL hit the average of Shreyas 39 and Pacers’ less than 6-8m good length area.
Shreyas ıyer vs pace bowling – shorter than 8m length
Season | Balls | Running | Average | Strike ratio |
IPL 2022 | 90 | 117 | 39.0 | 130.0 |
IPL 2024 | 79 | 101 | 50.5 | 127.8 |
IPL 2025 | 33 | 65 | 65.0 | 197.0 |
Last year’s average was up to 50.5, but the strike rate remained 127.8 low. These two seasons show that there is no danger of being dismissed by the short ball, but it is connected – sometimes something that can damage a team in the T20 jack.
This year, however, the first five inning saw that it was shot in 197 against these deliveries, on average 65. So far it was only 33 balls, but the signs are open – it became much more resourceful to convert shorter balls into scoring options.
Just like other sports, the jack is a game of compromise. His adjustments had unlock a running score street, but can they close another?
Ver and Al: What is the price that Shreyas Iyer pays for the new technique?
Now, there were whispers that the logs were vulnerable to the full delivery. Jofra Archer And Khaleel Ahmed He returned them to consecutive innings.
However, the dismissal of the archer came after Shreyas’ uniformly, taking the front leg out of the legs and trying to give the ball off the ball off the closed side. The Khaleel was a peach for an inswinger peach for a right -handed dough without raising from the left and for many of the best.
The renewed technique not only made Shreyas competent in combating shorter lengths, but also made it dominated by more leg side with a certain-six-shot.
Shreyas Iyer – limits against Pace Bowling (side / leg side)
Season | Quaternary | Six | Total |
IPL 2022 | 20/11 | 3/2 | 23/13 |
IPL 2024 | 11/11 | 3/4 | 14/15 |
IPL 2025 | 9/4 | 2/9 | 11/13 |
This year’s general number does not show any preference in both ways. But two things stand out – the first, from 2022 season, has already matched six teams. Second, it hits much more as it is closed on the leg side and the opposite for the four.
Now the tendency of self -anchoring to wrinkle in the leg log means that Shreyas’s mobility limits a little bit. The ability to score goals on the indoor side is now almost entirely dependent on his hands and his eyes working together. This can explain why the four are more often than six. It can still timer the ball and take gaps or get a chip via an infielder. However, most importantly, it is less likely to produce enough power to send the ball to the stands as on the leg side.

The distinction between the four and six becomes important, because in the T20 jack, bowling is usually about working where most of the error margin is in favor. If Shreyas hits the stands on the leg side, but not so much, the fast -speeding border can be better than the protection of the closed border and forcing it to hit the ground.
The first view of the data shows that it can be foolish. Against the delivery of Pacers’ stroke wrinkle outside the log line, an average of 86 this year and strikes. However, most of them are to deliver the leg side on a fourth or fifth cut line.
Against the delivery of Pacers, who came to wrinkle outside the fifth stump line, Shreyas’s overall record was inflated by making money (essentially wide half volley), where he could throw his hands perfectly-but-acting and come with a reasonable success. Good length and in a wide line, in short, it is the place where it can be relieved very significantly – it is probably losing here because it attracts itself to the muscles of leg stumps.
Shreyas Iyer – IPL 2025 against the delivery of Pacers outside the fifth log
Length | Balls | Running | Average | Strike ratio |
Full than 6m | 8 | 24 | – | 300.0 |
6-8m | 3 | 4 | – | 133.3 |
Shorter than 8m | 15 | 23 | 23.0 | 153.3 |
Total | 26 | 51 | 51.0 | 196.2 |
Against this form of attack, the argument is that Shreyas can simply come across and even try to pass to the leg side. However, in the movement, it may not be able to produce real power and it will be difficult to try after training the ‘plant and stroke’ style it currently uses.
The plan for quick contrast against Shreyas may be the following:
- Protect the closed side and hold the line wide.
- ERR shorter and wider.
- Try to survive to force the power to produce.
None of them will be guaranteed to reject Shreyas, but theoretically, it should help to cut the boundaries. In a short format as T20, Drying the runs may be more important than trying to buy a small door.. Do it sufficiently and the low scoring rate will inevitably force the dough to higher risk options-there is an opportunity.
