Who should be Team India Test captain after the retirement of Rohit Sharma. So far, numerous reports have suggested that Shubman Gill is the frontrunner, while Rishabh Pant could be his deputy. But Shubman’s record in Tests doesn’t bring a lot of confidence, and the added responsibility could further damage his numbers in the format.

Then who else is the choice? Former India batter Wasim Jaffer feels Jasprit Bumrah is the automatic choice. He further added that Gill should be the VC. “I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn’t want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC – stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest. This way Gill could also be groomed without the pressure of being the full time captain.,” Jaffer wrote on X.

There are other senior players in the Indian team as well, who could make for interesting choices. There is a certain KL Rahul, apart from Pant, and also Ravindra Jadeja, who is the most experienced player in the team right now. Apart from that, it also remains to be seen, as to what squad is picked for the England tour.

With the departure of Virat Kohli as well, India need a solid no. 4 batter as well. Perhaps someone like Shreyas Iyer can fit in well there, having some amount of experience in Tests.
