Watch: ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ was placed in Wankhede Stadium before the MCA ceremony

The Rohit Sharma stand will be opened on May 16 at 16:00 at Wankhede Stadium.

A huge honour is loading on Rohit Sharma’s way as an entire stand at the Wankhede Stadium is going to be put up by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) on his name. The former Indian Test captain will have a felicitation ceremony on Friday, May 16. However, ahead of the official function, the “Rohit Sharma Stand” has already been installed to ease logistical support and streamline preparations.

The much-anticipated ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ inauguration will take place on May 16 at 4 PM IST at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, just a day before IPL 2025 resumes. The ceremony was initially scheduled for May 13, but was deferred due to the BCCI’s temporary suspension of the IPL amid national security concerns stemming from geopolitical tensions with Pakistan. With tensions easing, the MCA has confirmed the revised date.

In a grand celebration of Mumbai cricket, the MCA will also unveil stands named after Sharad Pawar and Ajit Wadekar, along with the MCA Office Lounge in memory of former president Amol Kale. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, MCA President Ajinkya Naik, and former MCA chief Sharad Pawar are expected to be in attendance.

Rohit Sharma’s glorious career

Rohit Sharma, 38, is hailed as one of India’s greatest openers. Across 499 international games, he has scored 19,700 runs with 49 hundreds, including a record 264 in ODIs. In Tests, he scored 4,301 runs with 12 centuries before announcing his retirement ahead of the England tour.

The Wankhede honour is a fitting tribute to Mumbai’s modern-day cricketing icon.
